The Lancaster City striker scored 16 times this season before the campaign was brought to a premature halt because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Carsley would have liked to have notched a lot more than his final goals tally, but conisdering he spent a large portion of the season on the sidelines, he believes it was not a bad return.

However, he is hoping to stay out of the treatment room once football gets back under way – whenever that may be.

And if he does stay fit and healthy, he reckons he is more than capable of topping the goalscoring charts.

“I had a few setbacks,” Carsley said. “Fortunately, they all came in one go. I think I was out for eight or nine weeks.

“My tendonitis flared up again, then when I got back, I rolled my Achilles against Northwich in the FA Cup.

“It was tough being out for that amount of time, but that’s football .

“As a footballer, you have to accept you are going to get your injuries.

“But I am hoping next season, it’s going to be a clean sweep for me and I want to go for that top goalscorer award in the league.

“I know I have the capability to do it if I stay fit.

“I got 16 last season which was not too bad considering the number of games which I missed.

“I usually set myself a target of about 20 and I hope to do better than that.

“At the same time I didn’t play a full season of games , but with a good run at it, I think I can push for the top end of that goalscoring chart.”

Having spent a long period out injured, Carsley is eager to ensure that he is the best possible shape for when the new season does kick off.

With the lockdown restrictions allowing only one outing of exercise per outing, Carsley is ensuring he makes the most of that while adhering to social distancing.

“I did my first half-marathon the other day, so I am rying to keep myself fit,” he said.

“You have just got to try to keep yourself ticking over. I always keep myself in quite good shape anyway.”
