In an entertaining game that saw City create a host of quality scoring chances, the City will be disappointed not to have settled the game early on, and luckily avoided a late penalty scare in the dying minutes.

Pearce’s shot midway through the first half that rebounded off keeper Robert Dean into the net proved to be the winner, although Lancaster should have been well up at half-time.

Garry Hunter hit the post and Aaron Taylor also had a goal ruled out for offside in a lively first half that saw City head in at the break one to the good.

The second half started as the first ended with City on the front foot, attacking The Shed end without always finding the target.

Gavin Clark, Pearce and Hunter each tried their luck from distance but narrowly hit wide as the Dollies struggled to get a second.

Clark’s mazy run into the heart of the box late in the second period produced the hosts’ best chance, but his shot from close range was well saved by the feet of Dean.

City’s inability to put the game to bed almost cost them dear when Sam Garvie was bundled to the ground by Ben Hudson when through on goal, with the strong penalty claim waved away.

The Dolly Blues survived to set a trip to Padiham in the next round.
