Lancaster and Morecambe youth league wins county award

The district’s junior football league has won the FA Charter Standard League of the Year as part of the Lancashire FA’s FA Community Awards.

The award will see the group put forward for the regional and national FA gongs.

Around 1,000 children, ranging from under 7s up to under 17s, play for 19 clubs across the divisions every Sunday morning.

Secretary James Morgan, who took over the running of the league with wife Jeanette four years ago, said: “We’ve just tried different things.

“We tried to be open and honest and approachable 24/7.

“We’re out every Sunday taking in fixtures and have helped bring training for the clubs to the area rather than them having to go down to Leyland.”

The league had a landmark day last Sunday, May 15, as Morecambe FC’s Globe Arena hosted the league’s cup finals. 
James said: “It was brilliant.

“Everyone at the football club was great.

“It was just a really good day all round.”

The Service to Youth League has had a second reason to celebrate with referee Peter Worrall winning the Service to Grassroots Refereeing award at the Lancashire FA’s Referee awards.

Peter also takes charge of games in the North Lancashire and District Football League on a Saturday.
