Lancaster and Morecambe stalwart honoured for 50 years service in football

Morecambe FC's Dickie Danson receives his award from the Football Association.

Dickie Danson, Morecambe FC’s former assistant manager, director and head of youth, received a special honour from the FA to mark 50 years in the game at the Lancashire Football Association’s annual meeting in Leyland.

The 73-year-old, who is now senior academy scout and match day co-ordinator, received a special gold medal and pin badge from Lancashire FA President, Gordon Howard.

Danson said: “It’s a great honour to receive an award like this for something I have loved doing for so long.

“I’m proud and privileged to have been involved in the game locally and loved every minute of it.”

He was instrumental in creating the Shrimps’ youth development programme in partnership with Lancaster & Morecambe College which produced a string of players including Danny Carlton, Dave Perkins and Garry Thompson. Danson was also heavily involved in founding the club’s EPPP programme in 2012.

As well as his work at Morecambe FC, he has served Lancaster City with distinction, managing the Dolly Blues between 1982 and 1991.

He is also well known for managing the Lancaster junior football team in the Youth Games.

Shrimps director Rod Taylor said: “Dickie fully deserves this accolade. He has been a fantastic servant to local football and has been a credit to himself and his family.”
