Morecambe's assistant boss Ken McKenna insisted The Shrimps deserved something out of their 1-0 defeat at Luton on Tuesday night.

Jack Marriott’s goal 13 minutes from time was enough to inflict a fifth straight defeat on Jim Bentley’s side despite another decent display.

McKenna said: “They’ve got excellent quality throughout the team but we’ve played well.

“In the second half we knew they’d commit bodies forward and we’d have to be calm in defence and the lads have done well.

“We tried to hurt them on the counter and we were doing well and I didn’t feel in any danger.

“With the quality they have got they’ve scored but I thought the response was great.

“We’ve had really good chances and we normally take them. It’s just our luck we haven’t taken one but the performance overall was very good.

“We definitely deserved something out of the game.”

It was an eighth defeat in nine games but McKenna said it was another night where there were positives to take.

He said: “If we were playing badly you’d worry a little bit but we’re putting in good performances and just falling a little bit short.

“We’ll pick the bones out of this and then look to go again.

“We can’t let our heads go down because we’re not a bad side and we’re not playing badly.

“It’s got to turn. A little bit of luck tonight and we’d come away with something.”

The Shrimps were without Bentley as he was unwell and McKenna had hoped to help the manager back to full fitness with a much-needed win.

He said: “I’m gutted for him.

“He’s been a little bit under the weather and it would have been nice to take something back and give us something to build on.

“We’re in a slide but we are playing okay and we’ve just got to break that cycle and I’m sure we’ll be okay.”
