Jim Bentley: Lee Molyneux injury sums up our bad luck

Jim Bentley believes Lee Molyneux's injury in the defeat to Oxford was indicative of Morecambe's recent bad luck.

The former Accrington man was handed a start in the 4-2 reverse, which means The Shrimps have picked up just one of the last 18 points available, after Jamie Devitt phoned in sick of the morning of the game.

Molyneux was well on the way to taking his chance with his fine lob midway through the half levelling the scores at 1-1.

But to the confusion of much of the Globe Arena the midfield man then had to be immediately substituted due to a groin injury with Molyneux nearly in tears as he left the field.

Bentley said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for Lee Molyenux and he did really well.

“He was dead positive, got in the hole and created chances but just before the goal the physio (Simon Farnworth) said he looks like he’s struggling.

“We shouted over to him and he said he was sore so we got the substitute ready and as we were doing that he went through and scored the goal.

“It doesn’t look great when he scores a goal and I’ve got to sub him straight afterwards.

“That’s the kind of the thing that’s going against us at the moment.

“Football has a habit of when you are down sticking the boot into you.”

It was all the more frustrating for Molyneux as he has seen opportunities limited this season after arriving at the club in the summer on a two-year deal.

Bentley said: “He’s absolutely gutted because we haven’t seen the best of Lee Molyneux yet.

“He’s come to a new club and he’s the best player in training by far. He’s excellent.

“In pre-season and the games he’s played there’s been some good stuff and some indifferent stuff.

“He’s searching for that little bit of form and is desperate to do well.”
