The Irishman laid on two of The Shrimps’ goals in the 3-2 win at Carlisle last time out meaning he now has 11 for the season – the most of any player in the top four tiers of English football.

The midfielder’s fine form has seen him race past his tally of eight for the whole of last season ahead of the trip to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Devitt, who has scored twice this season, said: “I love setting up goals.

“I’d love to score a few more too if I’m honest.

“As long as I’m helping the team it doesn’t bother me really.

“Me and the manager (Jim Bentley) had a sit down at the start of the season and I’ve got targets for assists and goals.

“I don’t think I’m too far off now with the assists but I want to score more now.

“Contributing is the main thing though.”

Devitt isn’t the only man grabbing headlines with new boy Tom Barkhuizen on six goals for the season and fellow summer signing Shaun Miller having scored four in the last three games.

It is a prospect that like The Shrimps fans, excites Devitt.

The 25-year-old former Hull youngster said: “They’ve come into the team and hit the ground running.

“Tom has six goals now and Shaun got the four in the week.

“You could see Shaun’s quality from a higher level even when he wasn’t scoring.

“If they keep scoring it’s good for me because I’ll get a little bit of recognition from setting them up.

“And if we can keep going who knows where we’ll be at the end of the season.”

With plenty of competition at the sharp end of the field and a fine team spirit, Devitt believes everyone is keen to chip in.

He said: “There’s always a bit of friendly rivalry, especially with Kev, he does wind people up.

“There’s no pressure on anybody though and if anyone’s not doing well we help each other out.

“The bond that the team has it top class.

“I think everybody’s just enjoying themselves and playing with a bit of freedom.”

Wimbledon is a place that Devitt remembers well having scored in a 3-0 win back in April 2014 to secure Morecambe’s League 2 status for another year.

He said: “We needed to win down there.

“We did soak up some pressure and it flattered us a little bit but the result kept us in the league that year.

“I’ve got some good memories and hopefully we’ll get another good result this Saturday.”
