Tony Thompson's short-term contract at the Globe Arena expires next week.

Goalkeeper Tony Thompson is to leave Morecambe at the end of his contract.

The back-up stopper’s deal at the Globe Arena ends this week with Jim Bentley set to look elsewhere when it comes to cover for long-serving number one Barry Roche.

The 21-year-old former Rotherham youngster, who arrived at the club in the summer, made one start for The Shrimps in the 2-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat at Fleetwood on December 8.

Thompson had made his Football League debut seven days earlier after coming off the bench to replace the injured Roche in the 1-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

One player who could be staying at the Globe Arena however is Anton Forrester with The Shrimps in talks about extending the Blackburn striker’s loan for another month.

The powerful front man, who is yet to open his account for the club, led the line in both the Dagenham and Fleetwood games and has also made two substitute appearances in the defeats at Stevenage and York.

The movements represent the start of what Bentley expects to be a busy January transfer window with players needing to leave the Globe Arena if The Shrimps boss is to freshen up a squad currently 13th in League 2.

Speaking last Thursday he said: “We’ve got a loan that’s up, a contract that’s up, we’ve got a couple of young lads who’ve been out on loan and one or two who might go again on loan.

“There might be one or two of the senior lads who come knocking asking to go out on loan too.

“It’s a busy time when the January window opens.

“I think we’re the same as most clubs in that I think we need a bit of a freshness and a little bit of a turnaround.

“At the moment though people will have to leave before players can come in so we might have to do a bit of wheeling and dealing but we’ll see how the next week or two develops.”
