Subject to government guidance and approval for paying spectators, it’s planned that the Riversiders will begin league matches on September 5.

However, clubs have plenty of criteria to meet before any matches can be played.

Among those duties include appointing a Covid-19 officer from the current board or trustees to ensure risk assessments are completed and actions undertaken.

Risk assessments and action plans must also be published on each club’s website by mid-August with their respective leagues informed.

Equipment must also be cleaned regularly, while players and officials should also sanitise their hands before and after games, as well as during any breaks.

A Garstang statement issued on Tuesday morning said: “It is apparent that clubs face a Herculean task to put in place all the measures to ensure the safety of volunteers, players, managers and spectators.

“We all want to get back to playing but it looks like Covid-19 is something we are going to have to live with for some time to come and it will mean some massive changes to the way we have done things in the past.

“Having said that, it is something that we as a club want to tackle head on and all our board members have begun various tasks including extensive risk assessments, action plans and sourcing cleaning equipment and PPE.

“When football restarts is still uncertain as all clubs will need to be up to speed before matches can take place and of course there are all the unknown scenarios in the future but we are going to try our best to be ready when the time comes.

“With that in mind we need help from volunteers on matchdays to assist with the extra jobs that will inevitably be required.
