The first chance of the game fell to Slyne’s Hamilton in the seventh minute but he sliced his shot wide although they were fortunate not to go a goal down when McGowan’s shot was deflected into Brindle’s grateful arms.

O’Connor then brought Swindlehurst down on the edge of the Slyne box and from the resulting free kick McGowan pounced first, drilling home Garstang’s first goal.

Garstang almost added to their tally when a Graham corner fell to Roberts on the edge of the box but his strike was comfortably taken by Brindle.

Birch ran almost the full length of the pitch before testing Brindle in the Slyne goal and he was in the action again after pinching the ball in midfield before sending Poole away but O’Connor was alert enough to thwart the striker’s run.

Soon after a Birch cross found Graham who laid the ball into the path of McGowan but this time the midfielder steered his shot wide.

Garstang then missed a great chance to make it 2-0 when Poole was brought down in the penalty area and a spot kick was awarded.

However, Poole stepped up and blasted it over the bar on 43 minutes although Garstang made it 2-0 soon after.

Slyne were given a lifeline when Tom Entwisle coolly sloted home a penalty to make it 2-1 but Garstang soon regained control of the g ame when Graham ran 30 yards with the ball before releasing a perfectly weighted pass into Danny McGahon’s path, the midfielder’s strike flashed past Brindle’s outstretched hands to make it 3-1.

Garstang were reduced to ten men in the 75th when McGahon received a second yellow card but Slyne could not respond.
