Shrimps fans are being encouraged to give the club legend a fitting send off as he brings the curtain down on a 21-year career against Southend at the Globe Arena on Saturday.

The 39-year-old said: “It’s quite strange at the moment but I’m treating it as a normal week in the run up the game and I’m looking forward to some action.

“It’ll be a little bit different after the event when things sink in and it’s the end of the journey so to speak.

“They’re chasing promotion and there will be a big crowd in I believe so it should be a good atmosphere.”

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley was full of praise for the midfielder who acts as the club’s Head of Youth and Reserves manager.

He said: “The games he’s played, the dedication he’s showed to the club, I don’t think it will be matched ever again.

“I remember playing against him in the Conference when I was at Telford and always thinking he was one of the best.

“Then I came to the club and he was my captain I always thought he should be playing at a higher level.

“He went away and came back and he just carried on from where he left off first time round.

“He’s probably the best player I’ve played with and when I got the manager’s job he took over my duties as reserves manager.

“He’s done great and since then has got more and more involved in the youth set-up.

“But there comes at time at 39 you’ve got to look at your future and he’s got a big part to play.

“Yes he gets frustrated and thinks he should play every week, every player’s like that, but he’s got to look to the future.

“What a great achievement it is.”
