'Confident display' pleases the Morecambe manager after home draw

Morecambe boss Ashvir Singh Johal said his side fully deserved their point against in-form Scunthorpe United at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Saturday.

Admiral Muskwe’s 96th-minute penalty secured a 2-2 draw for a Morecambe team which went into the game on the back of last Tuesday’s FA Trophy humbling at Kidderminster Harriers.

Having led after seeing Miguel Azeez’s volley find the net via the woodwork and Scunthorpe keeper Rory Mahady, the Shrimps fell behind thanks to second-half goals from Callum Roberts and Joe Rowley.

However, Johal’s players kept fighting and levelled through Muskwe’s spot-kick after George Thomas was bundled over by Will Evans.

Johal said: “We put in a confident display today, with and without the ball, and we will take the point though it could have been three.

“I think we had the better chances overall and could have scored more.

“Defensively we need to be better in big moments but, in terms of the whole game, we looked better and we made sure we finished the game strongly.

“We knew we had to go for it until the death and we did that and battled right to the end – and need to build on that point now in the coming weeks.

“I think today, we showed the quality and the togetherness of the group.

“The spirit and the belief saw us put to bed Tuesday’s terrible performance.”

The point meant Morecambe remained third-bottom of the National League, four points from safety, but with two games in hand on fifth-bottom Braintree Town.
