Caton back to winning ways with victory over Highgrove

Both sides competed well and played some excellent football but the breakthrough came when a shot midway through the second half from Liam Jeffreys was directed into his own goal by James Booth.

After the setback Highgrove tried everything to get back into the game but they couldn’t break down Caton’s defence.

In the final Caton will play the winners of this week’s tie between Trimpell and Bare Rangers against Cartmel and District.

In the Eric Wilson Senior Challenge Cup semi final, Cartmel and District beat Carnforth Rangers 1-0.

Cartmel made all the early running and with just five minutes on the clock Adam Harding headed the ball to the far post where the lurking Carl Airey volleyed into the net from a tight angle just three yards out to give Cartmel a deserved lead.

The game then went mostly to the Cartmel half of the field as Carnforth went all out looking for the equaliser but were thwarted every time by a well organised Cartmel defence.

Carnforth’s main threats were Cameron Holmes and Damien Murphy but they got very little from Cartmel, Murphy going closest with 10 minutes remaining but his header went inches over the bar.

From the first whistle to the last it always looked as though Carnforth would score but huge credit must go to Paul Aireys’ side who played with dedication and concentration for the full 90 minutes.

In the final Carmtel will play Highgrove at a venue to be decided.

In the Baines Bagguley Penhale North Lancashire Football League Premier Division bottom club Bentham travelled to play Marsh United but were beaten 2-0.

Bentham played well but their failure to turn chances into goals continued as again they wasted a host of opportunities before Marsh hit them with two well worked goals from Joe Pollard and James Eccles.
