Hesketh’s Fulwood Amateurs host City in a 3pm kick-off at Lightfoot Green Lane on the back of their opening 4-0 win against a Stockport County XI on Tuesday night.

Brown, Hesketh’s assistant when the pair enjoyed a successful spell together at Giant Axe, said: “The Stockport game was a good run out against a good side but it wasn’t a first team.

“Saturday will be. Fulwood are in the West Lancs league but they’ve got some decent players who’ve played at our level and higher.

“It will be more physical and competitive and more aligned with what we can expect when the league campaign kicks off.

“It’s of course always good to see Tony as well.”

City’s pre-season programme then continues with a game against a Morecambe XI at Giant Axe on Tuesday, July 19, the first meeting between the clubs in seven years.

With The Shrimps hosting Premier League Burnley on the same night Stewart Drummond is expected to run a young side against the Dolly Blues.

Brown said: “Morecambe might not be sending a first team but it’s a pro club and they’ll be professional and disciplined.

“It will be another challenge for us as we gradually build towards August 13 and the start of the league season.”
