The Shrimps’ pre-season preparations ended on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to a Liverpool Academy line-up.

All of the goals came in the second half with Kevin Ellison giving Morecambe a second-half lead.

However, the Reds’ youngsters turned the match around with two goals in the last 10 minutes, both stemming from defensive mistakes.

“It was a good workout and I’m pleased with some aspects and disappointed with others,” Bentley said.

“We could have won the game but we made an error or two and that was the disappointing thing.

“Their changes seemed to affect their team better than ours did.

“They changed their formation but a couple of mistakes and a lack of concentration have cost us be it through tired minds or whatever.

“I think, first half, we should have been in front and, second half, we got the goal and could have scored a couple more.”

The loss was Morecambe’s third straight pre-season loss following on from the defeats against FC Halifax Town and Preston North End.

Late goals from Jack Dunn and Brooks Lennon made it 12 goals conceded in three games following on from only one against in the opening four matches.

“I’m disappointed in the respect of losing a couple of games on the spin but it’s pre-season, it’s about working on things,” Bentley said.

“We’re pleased fitness-wise; there have been a couple of little niggles in the last five weeks but nothing when you hear about people losing players for the longer term.

“Now we’ll be working on things with regards to the Grimsby game.”
