Bentley: Our luck is out but we didn’t do enough at Accrington

John Coleman’s side went ahead after five minutes in the 2-1 win through Luke Joyce’s spot kick after Alan Goodall was adjudged to have brought down John O’Sullivan.

There was then a large slice of luck in Stanley’s second shortly after with a Mark Hughes deflection taking Shay McCartan’s shot beyond Scott Davies.

The Shrimps showed spirit in the second half with Paul Mullin’s goal giving them hope but Bentley conceded his side simply didn’t do enough to get a point.

He said: “I’ve seen the decision and in my opinion it’s not a penalty.

“But when you’re having a bit of a sticky spell and a team’s got a new manager and a bit of momentum behind them these decisions go against you.

“I’m not going to harp on about decisions changing games though. The penalty was given, the crowd was up and our supporters were probably thinking, here we go again.

“They caused us problems with the momentum but the second goal had a large slice of luck, Scott Davies had it covered before a deflection’s taken it in the other corner.

“If things are going for you they’re the type of things that go in the back of the net if they aren’t that goes into row Z.

“They got that little bit of luck that’s deserting us at the moment. We got to the top of the league early on in the season because we had little bits of luck that went our way.

“But tonight with those two goals it went against us. It’s hard when it goes against you but I’m not going to blame that.

“We’ve got to do better. We’ve got to show more spirit when things are going against us like they are now.

“We’ve got to make sure we come out fighting and we did that in the second half and got the goal.

“We huffed and puffed but the game management at time was poor.”

Bentley refused to be too down about his side’s recent patchy form as he remained puzzled by a record that sees the Shrimps still looking for a first Football League win over Stanley after 15 games.

He said: “We’re going through a difficult spell at the moment and it can happen in football.

“As soon as you’re on a good spell and a crest of a wave you can find things difficult.

“It’s not all doom and gloom but I wanted more tonight. We’ve got to keep battling on.

“I respect Accrington as a football club but something’s not right when you can’t beat your local rivals for so many games.

“I wouldn’t be disappointed if we didn’t have to come here again.”

The Shrimps boss said Paul Mullin was taken off as a precaution in the second half.
