Saturday’s teamsheet for the mini-tournament against Blackburn Rovers and Bury contained a number of youngsters who have come through the club’s Academy set-up.

Ben Hedley played the full game against Bury, a game in which another youngster, Steve Yawson, came on with time running out and set up Tom Barkhuizen’s goal in Morecambe’s 4-0 victory.

“We’ve always put our Academy kids in if they are good enough,” the manager said.

“Steve came on late and did well, while Ben played 45 minutes in midweek, got another 60 today and did well again.

“I’ve got every confidence in the youth set-up and it will go from strength to strength.

“It’s a well established set-up that we have now and it will go from strength to strength.

“We’ve had one or two decent players come through that system and you look at someone like (Aaron) McGowan who’s 19 years old and doing well.

“We’ve got one or two others who are right up there so it’s something the club should be pleased about.”
