Barry Roche: First goal an unbelievable feeling but I didn't know how to celebrate!

The Shrimps stopper rose highest to head home Shaun Miller’s corner in the 94th-minute to seal a 1-1 draw that ended a run of three straight defeats for Jim Bentley’s side amidst scenes of pandemonium at the Globe Arena.

Roche said :”I hadn’t got a clue what to do.

“I thought about doing a Klinsmann but the pitch is too dry so I just jumped and then there was the pile on of all pile ons.

“I couldn’t breath so I had to throw a few off me but it’s a great feeling.”

The long-serving number one said scoring was a better feeling than any save he’d ever made.

It was also a goal that handed The Shrimps a much-need point which Roche thought was richly deserved.

Roche said: “It’s an absolutely unbelievable feeling.

“It’s better than a top corner save, a penalty save, if I could bottle that feeling I certainly would.

“It’s the least we deserved because in difficult conditions, especially in the second half, I thought we were outstanding.”

Roche’s goal saw him change tactic from when he has previously gone up for corners and ultimately score with his eyes closed.

He said: “Usually when I go up for corners I stand in front of the ‘keeper and make a little movement.

“I said to myself I won’t do that because I’ve had no joy.

“I’ve gone up and their centre half has picked me up but as soon as I’ve run I’ve thought this ball is mine and luckily I managed to get my head on it. I think I closed my eyes!”

Remarkably Roche had already had one shot on target in the first half with Ryan Fulton just about keeping out a wind-assisted clearance.

He said: “I didn’t realise how close the one in the first half was.

“As I’ve kicked it I’ve turned away in disgust that I’ve put it straight rather than in the corner.

“All the lads said that if it’d been a bit of a shorter ‘keeper then it might have done him.”

Shrimps boss Bentley hailed the result as a turning point with Roche knowing The Shrimps now have to kick on at Mansfield on Saturday.

He said: “Hopefully we can kick on from that now.

“We’ve had some bad luck in the last three games and we’ve not played to our best.

“But to pick up a point in the circumstances we did we’ve got to make sure we kick on at the weekend.”
