Abbie nets winner in final as girls celebrate tournament success

The girls won their group games, 1-0, 1-0 and 3-0 to advance to the quarter-finals, Zoe Grime scoring all of Great Wood’s goals.

Great Wood then faced Ryelands and after going 1-0 down fought back to win the match 2-1.

In the semi-final Great Wood came up against Slyne and again went a goal down.

The game finished 1-1 and after extra time there was a penalty shoot-out which was won by Great Wood in sudden death.

The final was against Willow Lane and Great Wood prevailed, winning a tense match 1-0 thanks to a strike by captain, Abbie Catlow.

The success means that Great Wood progress to the Lancashire Youth Games being held in Blackpool at the end of June where they will represent Morecambe and Heysham.

The Great Wood girls who represented their school in the tournament were Gabrielle Cowan, Eve Clement, Abbie Catlow, Genevieve Holchaks, Claudia Bowles, Zoe Grime and Rachel Lister.
