Aaron Wildig: Competition for places means we’re all gunning for goals

Nine different scorers have been on target this season for a Shrimps side that have scored 13 goals in their last four games.

The in-form midfielder said: “The top scorer is only on two goals but I think we’ve scored something like 13 goals in the last four games.

“I’m not sure if anyone’s scored two in a game yet either.

“It’s quite strange but as long as we’re scoring goals it doesn’t matter where it’s coming from.

“It’s down to competition for places.

“We all know there’s someone waiting to take our place in the team so we’ve got to keep our form up.

“People are trying to get in the box and get on the scoresheet and at the moment it’s working well with everyone chipping in.”

Wildig himself has two goals, already well on the way to his target of five for the season.

The former Shrewsbury man, who made a loan move to the Globe Arena permanent in the summer, said: “I’ve managed to couple and maybe could have had a couple more.

“I had a chance at Portsmouth just before we went 3-0 up, I hit the bar there too.

“I’ve had a couple of other shots here and there. I set myself a target of five.

“It would be my top scoring season to date but the way things are going, if I keep getting chances, I might have to reassess it.”

His latest strike, an acrobatic finish at Yeovil on Saturday, started a Shrimps comeback that ended in a 4-2 win at Huish Park.

Wildig said: “It was a nice finish and I was happy with it.

“They were down to 10 men so it was slightly different to a normal game.

“But at half-time we knew we only needed one goal and once we got it we felt like we were going to win.

“If it had gone on for another 10 minutes I think it could have been six or seven.”

The Shrimps next head to bottom side Newport on Saturday for another trip hours from home for most of the squad.

Not Wildig however who is originally from Hereford.

He said: “These are nice trips, it’s about 25 minutes from my house.

“They are struggling but I think they’ve been hard done by in a few games and it’ll be a difficult game.

“This league’s so tight. My dad was telling me we were 16th at one point last Saturday and we ended up fifth.

“I don’t think there’s much between any of the teams this year.”
