Without a league game for the fifth time this season the Heysham Atoms were big winners at Premier Division side Folly Lane in a hard-fought friendly on Saturday.

After a lethargic start against a Swinton side containing former Leeds Rhinos stand off Graham Holroyd as player-coach, the Atoms dominated the contest.

There were some eye-catching individual performances with full back Jamie Cottle running in a hat-trick of tries, Matty Humpage impressive at hooker and captain Stuart Lacey putting in an immaculate kicking display as he kicked a perfect 10 conversions.

It was the Swinton side who drew first blood however, a straight-forward handling move directly from a scrum undoing the Atoms as the hosts scored in the left-hand corner.

The conversion was missed and the Atoms soon rectified their early problems scoring three quick tries.

First under 18s prop Dan Rodriguez forced his way over the line after a great pass from fellow prop forward Jason Short.

Cottle then got his first after the Atoms had forced two goal-line drop outs with Jack Edmondson out-pacing the cover to add a third.

Folly hit back on the 20 minute mark breaking through to score after some weak Atoms defending as they struggled with Holroyd’s selection of passes.

But Heysham responded with three tries of their own again, Edmondson scoring from long range try before Cottle added his second and Jake Harrison broke clear to join the party and give the Atoms a 36-10 half-time lead.

The second period was similar to the first with the Heysham side well on top.

Cottle completed his hat-trick before Jack Lawton intercepted and ran unopposed 60 metres for his try.

Folly at last found some form and scored two tries on the back of Atoms errors to make the score 48-22 with a quarter of the game still left to play.

But the Atoms found another gear to round off a fine day, Dan Helme scoring from a short run round the back of the ruck before Lacey scored a try to take his total to an impressive 24 points.
