Fight greats Barry McGuigan and John Conteh team up for dinner

Boxing legends Barry McGuigan and John Conteh will star in ‘A Night to Remember’ at Lancaster and Morecambe College.

The two former world champions will be guests of honour at a sportsman’s dinner on Saturday, March 21.

Both McGuigan and Conteh will give after dinner speeches telling stories of their careers in the ring.

This year marks 30 years since McGuigan, known as ‘The Clones Cyclone’, won the World Featherweight Championship against boxing hall of famer Eusebio Pedroza at Loftus Road football club in front of a Saturday night BBC1 TV audience of millions. The Northern Irishman’s title fights united Belfast at the height of The Troubles and in 1985 he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Liverpudlian Conteh won the World Light Heavyweight Championship in 1974 and was one of the most stylish and handsome boxers of his generation. The event is promoted by Legend Promotions, a joint venture between boxing trainer and ex-pro Frank Harrington and Morecambe businessman Asa Johnson. It will include live music from Dan Doherty and a three-course meal. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Funds will be raised for St John’s Hospice.
