Morecambe’s newest amateur boxing club got off to a winning start on a show in Preston on Friday night.
Steven Douglas won his first ever amateur bout representing West End Road based Coastal Amateur Boxing Club at 53 Degrees.
Douglas took the fight against the far more experienced Moshin Usmani at short notice but didn’t read the form book against the home-town favourite - coming out a points victor.
From round one Douglas took the centre of the ring and started catching Usmani with a flurry of fast, hard shots to the head before stepping up the pressure in the second round.
An upset was on the cards at the start of the third and as both boxers tired the quality and precision came from the Coastal fighter who forced the referee to give Usmani a standing eight count as the bell sounded before being declared the unanimous winner.
Head coach Paul Fielding said: “Considering this was Steven’s first amateur bout I was very impressed with the way he handled the more experienced boxer and showed he has a great future in the amateur ranks.”
