The world number 77 was a 6-4 winner, notching seven 180s and recording an average of 102.25 to knock out Morecambe’s number eight seed in Munich.

Chisnall, who had beaten Jermaine Wattimena 6-4 in round two, struggled to get his own average above 90 and despite a 164 finish in the fifth leg to take the lead, he couldn’t live with his unheralded opponent who started leg eight with two maximums as he grew in confidence in front of the sell-out 2,000 crowd.

Dobey nearly pulled off an even bigger shock in the last eight but eventual champion Michael van Gerwen prevailed 6-5 on his way to a 10th European Tour title.

The world number one came from behind to see off Peter Wright 6-4 in Monday night’s final at the BallhausForum.
