Morecambe captain: Title win beyond my wildest dreams

The Woodhill Lane men sealed their first Northern League championship since 2006 with an emphatic win over Preston on Saturday.

Dixon said: “It feels fantastic.

“I honestly couldn’t have dreamt of anything like this in my first year as captain.

“We would have been quite content with top six and pushing for the top four.

“So to win it and win it with a week to spare is awesome.”

The captain paid tribute to a great all-round team effort with Sri Lankan international Suraj Randiv a real stand-out performer in his first season as Woodhill Lane.

Dixon said: “I think the pro has had a massive influence.

“His professionalism has really rubbed off on everyone else.

“He also came in and wanted to win the league from ball one.

“In the second half of the season we’ve had a settled side too.

“Everyone’s been pulling in the same direction. Getting the likes of Mark Woodhead, Phil Dennison and Gareth Pedder back into the side has given us a real mix of youth and experience.

“Eddy Read has challenged for titles before and he’s come in and done well too. It’s just all come together really.”

Now all that remains is for Morecambe to have a fitting finale with Blackpool the visitors to Woodhill Lane on the final day of the season this Saturday.

Dixon said: “We’ve got to win on Saturday.

“We want to finish on a high and then lift the trophy in front of our home fans.

“We’ve won our last four so why can’t we make it five.

“All the guys are focused on doing that.”

Dixon and his men will receive the trophy after the Blackpool clash with their presentation evening following the game.

All senior players and supporters after invited from 8pm with a supper and disco until late.

The game is a 12.30pm start.
