Flurry of wickets hands Westgate the win

Westgate were able to get back to winning ways on Saturday but it was far from comfortable in yet another nail-biter with a gritty Ambleside team.

estgate batted first on winning the toss but yet again were off to a horrendous start at 43-6.

The catalyst was left armer Callum Steel, as he took the first six wickets to fall.

Despite a few early wides and no-balls he was able to produce some jaffas in between as everything that landed on the strip was either leg before or bowled.

Once he settled into his rhythm he found just enough in the wicket to deservedly claim figures of 6-51 – at one point perhaps looking at all 10.

The only noteworthy partnership of the innings came from veteran Garry Tattersall (11) and keeper-batsman Craig Buchanan (32 not out) who both looked more than comfortable on what was by no means a bad wicket.

The 35 they added for the seventh wicket proved to be crucial, but another collapse ensued at the death as four wickets fell for just 10 runs as Westgate finished on 88 all out.

Buchanan once again showed his resolve and maturity and has found the excellent habit of scoring crucial runs when all those around him fail.

Westgate were disappointed with their below par performance but by no means were about to give up.

The two danger men Oliver Wileman (14) and Daniel Douglas (10) were off to a reasonable start but both soon fell trapped in front to captain Andy Hill as the match soon became very interesting at 37-3.

Waddell and Adam Southworth recovered to 54-3 but by this time Hill (5-20) and first change bowler Andy Nisbet (5-24) were both bowling full and straight and giving little away in terms of scoring opportunities.

As the pressure began to tell a flurry of wickets followed as the last seven wickets fell for just 17 runs in 12 overs with Westgate claiming the maximum 15 points and Ambleside one.
