Comeback king Chizzy now targeting Worlds

Morecambe-based ‘Chizzy’ fell 16-13 to Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in a pulsating final on Sunday.

Earlier, Dave’s come-from-behind wins in his semi-final and quarter-final had Sky Sports viewers on the edges of their seats.

After collecting the £50,000 runners up cheque, Chisnall thanked his fiancee Michaela Davis and young daughter Lexie-Rose who cheered him on in the packed Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

‘Chizzy’ was so close to claiming his first televised PDC title on Sunday night after he sensationally pegged the 16-times world champion back to 10-10 from 5-0 and 8-3 down.

Then after ‘The Power’ pulled 15-10 ahead, ‘Chizzy’ rattled Taylor by reeling off three legs in a row.

But the Potteries ace held his nerve to claim his sixth SINGHA Beer Grand Slam of Darts title.

Chisnall said: “I’m happy with my performance over the last week but the final got away from me at the beginning.

“You can’t give Phil Taylor a 5-0 lead, and even though I’ve been further behind this week Phil was too good in the end.

“When I got to 10-all I thought I could take the win, but I missed a double to pull back to 12-11 and when it got to 15-10 it was a struggle.

“It was never over until he hit the final double and I kept fighting hard, but the better man won.”

‘Chizzy’s semi-final victory on Sunday afternoon saw him fight back from 14-12 down to defeat Belgium’s Kim Huybrechts 16-15 in an incredible encounter.

But this comeback paled compared to his astonishing overhaul of the prodigious Keegan Brown on Friday night.

World Youth Champion Brown, who had despatched former world champion Raymond van Barneveld in the last 16, pulled ahead 8-2 and 12-6. But Chizzy clawed his way back into the contest, landing 11 maximums and a 170 finish on his way to a 16-14 triumph.

Chisnall’s Wednesday night last 16 defeat of Robbie Green was altogether more straightforward, with our yellow-shirted ace notching a 10-3 win.

The St Helens-born star, ranked number eight in the world, is now targeting the PDC World Darts Championship, which begins on December 18.
