Arron Newby, along with Isle of Man co-driver Rob Fagg came out on top in Sunday’s P & R Benn Greystoke Stages Rally - organised by West Cumbria Motor Club.

The event, which over the years become one of the most popular rallies in the north, attracted a full entry of 60 cars with top crews coming from as far afield as Mull, Whitby and Wales.

Newby and Fagg, seeded at number three in the TEGSport/Pirelli Subaru Impreza had tough competition in the form of rapid locals such as Richard and Edwin Cook, along with Steve Bannister and Louise Rae in their always quick Escort Mk2.

After a somewhat down-on-power engine for the first four very muddy stages, the Carnforth ace and his co-driver found that a cracked manifold was to blame.

However, team member Gary Tomlinson sportingly lent his manifold which not only cured the problem, but assisted Newby to a convincing win of 29 seconds as he posted five consecutive fastest times.

Richard and Edwin Cook came home in second.

Also competing on the rally was Morecambe’s Katy Mashiter who was co-driving for Spadeadam’s Clive Alcock in his Sunbeam Ti, who were seeded and also finished at 51.
