Morecambe’s new Commonwealth featherweight champion does most of his training over in Doncaster with Jimmy Harrington and Dave Hulley at Freedom ABC.

But former Lancaster Boxing Academy coach Howard, who saw Lowe through from the age of 10 to the start of his pro career, is still a big part of the team and was in the corner at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night.

The Morecambe-based trainer was bursting with pride after his man stopped Belfast’s Marco McCullough in the eighth round of their clash for the vacant belt on the undercard of Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg’s huge unification fight.

Howard said: “I’m so proud, so excited.

“Against an opponent like that to finish it off was unbelievable.

“All that hard work over the years has paid off for him.

“It’s absolutely unbelievable, I can’t describe how I feel.”

Harrington was left delighted after their gameplan came to fruition on the biggest night of 22-year-old Lowe’s 13-fight professional career, revealing they believed McCullough had struggled to hit the 9st featherweight limit.

He said: “We knew, without speaking out of turn, when we looked at him over the last few days that at the press conference he looked dry and at the weigh in on Friday he was dry as a bone.

“We knew though that he’d be very, very strong for four rounds which proved to the case.

“Isaac switched off in parts and pardon my language but he got a bit of a bollocking and switched back on and the real Isaac Lowe came to fruition towards the end.

“He’s put his heart and soul into Dave Hulley and myself since he’s come down about 10 months ago.

“It shows if you dedicate yourself to something, you put the time in, listen and surround yourself with good people then good things will happen as tonight has proved.

“There’s a young man there who maybe 18 months ago he was just going in for a rout and trying to be the toughest but there are more ways to do things.”
