The Bentham light-heavyweight, now 7-1 as a professional, dominated all six rounds against Elvis Dube at the Guild Hall but suffered another injury setback in the process.  The 60-54 victory was only the 25-year-old’s second fight since coming back from a wrist problem that kept him out of the ring for more than a year.

Tatham is now determined to stay positive as he faces up to more frustration.

The man known as TNT said: “I’ve broken my right hand but it’s nothing to do with the old injury which is really good.

“That’s rock solid but an x-ray has showed my hand is broken and I’ve got a cast on.

“Hopefully it will be about six weeks.

“I’m just going to stay positive and keep training.

“At least I know how to train with one hand after last time!”

Tatham wanted a knockout on the night but found Dube, who he had stopped earlier in his career, a tough nut to crack with the Derby man enduring a near non-stop onslaught.

He said: “I wanted the knockout and tried my hardest to get it and blew up a little bit.

“I could have hit him with a table and it wouldn’t have got him out of there.

“Fair play to him but I’m happy I got a win.

“It was an alright performance and I’ve got things to work on.

“With my hand, a bit of a sore throat towards the end of the week and the water cut didn’t help but all excuses aside I won every round and I’m happy.

“I got a message from Elvis on Facebook after the fight.

“He said he’d never in his life been hit that hard.”

The Bentham man was roared on by the loudest support of the night as 150 travelled from across the region to support him.

He said: “I was made up, everyone took the roof off.

“My coach (Karl Ince) slapped me at the end of the second (round) and said, ‘don’t listen to them, keep your head in the game and box nice’.

“I tried taking my time but I could hear them so I stepped on the gas again.

“The support was amazing and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“Everyone’s been saying how great my lot are.

“I wanted them to bring the noise and they did.”

In the main event of VIP Promotions’ Boxing is Back bill Tatham’s stable mate, Penrith’s Rick Skelton, lifted the British Masters Silver Light Middleweight title with a points win over veteran former Commonwealth Champion Bradley Pryce.
