The Westgate Warrior’s long-time trainer was ringside back in 1983 when the Lancaster Lion Alan Lamb lost out to Clinton McKenzie in his British super lightweight title bid in Liverpool.

Lowe, just 21 and unbeaten in nine fights, will become the first fighter from the district to fight for a national belt since that night when he takes on Lee Glover in Blackburn for the English featherweight title on April 4.

Howard said: “I was there as a kid when Alan Lamb boxed for a British title.

“I would have been about 12 or something like that. His dad was my trainer as an amateur.

“It’ll be great for both of us if we can bring that title back to Lancaster and Morecambe.

“After then after the English it’s the British and move on from there.

“It’s all well within his capabilities.

“I’ve got 100 per cent confidence in him.”

Howard has looked after Lowe since taking him under his wing as an amateur at Lancaster Boxing Academy and says his success in the paid ranks is no surprise.

He said: “It’s a big thing for both of us.

“I’m learning new things as well, not just Isaac.

“We always said from when he was a kid that the pro game would suit him better.

“It’s just been about getting him up for fights in the past but he’s focused now and he knows what he can do.

“And they’ll be bigger and better things after this.”

Howard has had plenty of help from Sean O’Hagan, the father and trainer of fast-rising Leeds featherweight Josh Warrington.

Other top-class sparring has included world bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell with it all ensuring that Lowe is in the shape of his life for his first 10-round fight.

Howard said: “He’s had fantastic sparring with Josh Warrington, Maxi Hughes, Jamie McDonnell.

“We’re trying to dial him down a little bit and make him think a bit more.

“That’s what he’s got to do, especially in his first 10-rounder, his first step up.

“He’s got all the ability and class. He’s trained really hard and is in the best shape he’s ever been in.

“He’s worked unbelievably hard and is really, really focused on the fight.

“I’ve always said that when he gets a test we’ll see the best of him.

“He’s got this chance and he’s going to grab it with both hands.”
