Skerton fighters on form for home crowd at Morecambe FC

Fight fans were treated to some top amateur action as Skerton Boxing Club held a bumper show at the Globe Arena.

A mixture of the club’s younger and older boxers were in action on a 13-bout card at the home of Morecambe FC on Friday night.

The night opened with exhibition bouts for youngsters Leighton Birchall, Adam Burke, John Tom Varey and John Varey who warmed up the crowd in fine style.

The action started properly with wins for Nelson Birchall and Frank Varey over boxers from Leigh ABC.

Jimmy Mason then picked up the junior boxer of the evening award for his win before John Dugdale won a split decision.

Lucas Cheney lost a controversial split decision to a Blackpool fighter but Danny Robb got Skerton back to winning ways by keeping up his 100 per cent record since his return to the club with a unanimous points win.

Danny’s twin brother Joey was also a winner in the next bout as Skerton continued to rack up victories.

William Birchall then lost a second contested split decision of the night before the first title fight of the evening ended with a disqualification for Reece Mills’ opponent from Sharpstyle ABC in their 52kg North West belt battle.

Andre Vidal Jnr then made sure of he kept his 66kg belt for good with a successful third defence in a scrappy affair.

Mathew Doey gave his opponent two standing eight counts on his way to another victory for the home club before Marcin Lewicki picked up a spectacular knockout win over Rory Roberts with the Leigh man’s corner throwing in the towel after just 45 seconds. 
Next in was Sean Coxon who became the latest victim of a controversial split decision.

But the night ended on a high for the Morecambe club with Niall Doherty picking up a unanimous points win.
