The club had been chosen to host three championship bouts for England Boxing seniors, as boxers from Manchester, Preston, Kirkham and Carlisle fought to progress to the semi-finals in Manchester on the 20th of this month.

Ring announcer Greg Lambert got the evening under way by announcing Commonwealth welterweight gold medallist Scott Fitzgerald into the ring.

First in the ring for Skerton was John Dugdale (10) in his first outing for the club in a ‘skills’ or exhibition bout.

Next in was Shaun Michael Varey (14) who went on to win the junior boxer of the evening with an all-action display and unanimous decision over Finlay Lea-Sain of Blackpool.

Andre Vidal Junior was next in and put in a fantastic performance to win against Robbie Pattinson from Wigton in the first round.

Next through the ropes for Skerton was William Birchall (13) in his first outing for the club and he made a great start to win a unanimous decision against Chorley’s Lewis Tiley.

Matthew Doey (16) was next and was boxing a far more experienced opponent in Levi McMeekin of Barrow, losing a close decision.

Unbeaten Steven Douglas faced Phil Hervey from Leigh who has had more than 60 amateur bouts but Steven was as impressive and hard-hitting as always, pounding out a unanimous decision.

Sean Coxon has recently returned from a very serious injury and this was his first outing in almost a year. He landed some clean shots on Ben Hale of Wigton and was unlucky to lose a close decision.

Bob Rowntree was next in the ring against Leigh boxer Adam Ridge with more than 55 amateur bouts to his name and a current two-weight belt holder. Ridge won a decision.

Marcin Lewicki, a heavy hitting boxer, unleashed some heavy punches to win in style over Paul Riley inside a minute.

Niall Doherty controlled his fight with Tony Boardman of Leigh and won a clear decision.

The night ended with Carl Whyte beating Jack Pattinson from Wigton by decision.

On Saturday four of the club’s senior boxers will be competing in the North West Championships in Manchester. Steven Douglas, Sean Coxon, Bob Rowntree and Marcin Lewicki will be hoping to add to last season’s great success in the championships.
