Lowe spurred on by gym mate's success ahead of Commonwealth title fight

Morecambe’s hot prospect faces Marco McCullough for the vacant Commonwealth Featherweight title on the undercard of the huge world title unification fight between Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton at the Manchester Arena on February 27.

Lowe, the current English champion, was in Belfast at the weekend as gym mate Maxi Hughes won his British title eliminator against home favourite James Fryers.

The Westgate Warrior says seeing his training partner’s success has spurred him on as he closes in on his own England v Ireland battle against Frampton stablemate McCullough.

Lowe said: “It was great to go over there.

“Maxi and me have been training really hard since Christmas and this was his big chance in a British title eliminator.

“The Irish guy was the big favourite but Maxi went over there and upset the odds.

“It gave me a really good kick knowing we can do it. It gave me a taste of what the Irish crowd might be like in Manchester too.

“They’re going to be noisy but it will get me more keyed up than ever.”

Having grafted on small hall shows the huge Frampton-Quigg bill will see Lowe fight on his third straight arena show in what is arguably the biggest ever fight for someone born and bred in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

The former Lancaster Boxing Academy fighter, currently training at the Freedom Boxing Club in Doncaster, has limited tickets available for a show that’s also live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The unbeaten 22-year-old said: “It wasn’t long ago that I was fighting in front of six or seven hundred people and now it’s 20,000.

“It shows what a long way I’ve come in a short space of time.

“I’m just determined to prove how much I’ve come on.

“This the biggest fight for someone to come out of the area. I hope people can support me, even if they’re not in the arena.

“I really do appreciate all the backing and I’m going to bring that belt back.”
