Morecambe’s former English and Commonwealth champion was behind on the cards at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus, Denmark on Saturday night when a head clash in the fourth round left the champion with a bad cut.

The fight was waved off by referee Giuseppe Quartarone and declared a technical draw, Lowe down 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 at the time according to the three judges.

The heated build-up, the pair pulled apart again at Friday’s weigh-in, had been reflected in a wild first round with both men letting their hands go and trading shots.

The Westgate Warrior was nearly put down at the end of the opening session but recovered and settled into his boxing.

Ceylan again took the second with a strong finish but Lowe was improving all the time and after a strong showing in the third, the fourth round was shaping up to be his best of the fight.

But as the former Lancaster Boxing Academy youngster went to throw a right hand to the body, he clashed heads with Ceylan, who looked immediately shaken, with the fight soon brought to an unsatisfactory conclusion after frantic discussions between the London 2012 Olympian’s corner, man in the middle Quartarone and the ringside doctors.

“It was all going to plan,” said Lowe.

“Dennis is a tough guy. He was strong and big and he came at me in the first few rounds and gave it everything he had.

“But he couldn’t hurt me and I was just starting to get into it.

“I was starting to put pressure on him and hurt him.

“I’ve proved I belong at that level.

“As soon as it happened they were checking what round it was in the corner.”

Booed on his arrival in the arena with more than 5,000 fans cheering on the home favourite, Lowe looked settled under the bright lights with Tyson Fury part of the entourage walking him to the ring.

“I was ready to do a job and if it had gone a few more rounds I’d have come home with that belt.”

Fury was part of a vocal following for Lowe in Denmark, the rising star admitting he’s been overwhelmed by all the support he’s received.

“I want to thank everyone for the support in Denmark and back home,” he said.

“All the things people have said over the last few days means so much to me.

“Having the fans cheering and the national anthem playing was a very, very proud moment.

“I didn’t want it to end.”
