LANCASTER athlete Beau Smith will be competing in the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, the third race in the five-race British Triathlon Super Series, just one month before the East End hosts the Olympic games.

Smith, who has represented the North West at the National Inter-Regional Championships, will be battling it out with a strong elite field in only the second ever GE Canary Wharf Triathlon on Thursday, June 28.

Lancaster Royal Grammar School pupil Smith, said: “I am really looking forward to racing at the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon again.

“I competed last year and it was probably my best achievement to date, when I qualified by right for the final, and went on to finish 11th.

“I really enjoyed the whole event, the atmosphere, the course and the support were all brilliant, and I loved racing in the city of London and appearing on TV!

“Last year I made the front bike pack in both the heat and the final, and hope to do so again and learn what I can from riding with some of the best triathletes in the world.

“For the rest of the season, I aim to do the best I can in the Super Series races to improve my ranking position, and if I can raise enough money to finance it - through sponsorship, prize money or whatever other means - I would like to race at another European Cup event.”

The athletes will compete in a series of 30 minute heats, consisting of a 400m swim, 10km bike and 2km run, before a grand final where world-class athletes will compete for the men’s and women’s titles.

Following the GE Canary Wharf Triathlon, the British Triathlon Super Series travels to Scotland for the GE Strathclyde Park Triathlon before it reaches its climax at the Virgin Active London Triathlon on September 23.
