Athletics: Juniors refuse to let muddy conditions hold them back

Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club’s junior squad were out in force at the Northern Cross Country Championships.

The prestigious event, on Saturday, January 25, took place in tough conditions but there were some terrific performances from the enthusiastic junior 

In the U13 girls, Emma Whitaker delivered yet another strong performance, finishing in a magnificent 10th place in the enormous field.

She was doggedly supported by her teammates Amy Monkhouse , 114th, Ffion Ashton, 115th and Bryony Sharp, 204th, giving the team a 21st-place finish.

In the U13 boys, Shea Hannam finished in 64th with Benjamin Winterburncoming home in 85th. In the U15 girls Lancaster and Morecambe only had one runner, Shannon Perry, who finished in 134th.

In the U15 boys, Niall Graham, in 134th, was the first of the boys to finish and he was well supported by the rest of the team, with George Tostevin, 143rd, Joseph Twigg, 145th and Jamie Hardy, 165th, ensuring the team finished in 20th position.

In the U17 girls Georgia Hannam was first back for the club in 30th position followed by Jess McCracken in 93rd.

In the U17 boys Solomon White came through in 86th place.

The best team result was in the under 20 women’s event where Sarah Hodgson, 12th, Zoe Harding, 25th, and Hannah Fleet, 46th, finished fifth.
