The Lancashire Sport awards ceremony in Preston Guildhall on Friday September 29 brought to an end a fantastic year for Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club.

Two key members of the club had been selected to represent the Lancaster area and very much enjoyed a ceremony which focussed on successful performers at the London Olympics.

Club Chairman Billy Gardner received the Highly Commended award for Lancashire in the Lifetime Achievement category, to reward him for over 20 years of coaching runners and athletes and inspiring many people to start jogging and running.

He has also been instrumental in developing the club into one of the largest in Lancashire, with a total of over 400 members.

This was a much deserved award.

Club development coach, Jennie Hodgson, was nominated for Lancaster as Coach of the Year and again this was very much deserved.

She has been responsible for major developments in the junior section of the club – developing an enthusiastic and professional group of coaches which means that the club is able to accept more youngsters.

She has also played a major role in developing and organising young athletes to participate in athletics meetings and competitions all over the North West, where they have been very successful.

They have competed in the Premier League of the National Young Athletes League, producing athletes who have achieved country, regional, national and international honours.

These awards have brought to an end a year in which the club has achieved the prestigious Clubmark status, has enrolled more members than ever before and in which the teams have performed exceptionally well.

In addition to the young athletes, in the cross country competitions the Senior Ladies won the mid Lancs Cross Country League and the Senior Men won the County Plate award.

The club has training sessions for juniors and adults every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6.30pm, from its clubhouse adjacent to the track at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.

The club’s next race is the Festive Fun Run at 11am on December 27th. For more information see
