Jet2 will not resume flights and holidays to Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca this summer - here’s why
Jet2 has announced that all flights to the Balearic Islands will be cancelled for the rest of the summer season.
The airline suspended flights to both mainland Spain and the Balearic and Canary Islands in July, after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) changed its travel advice due to rising cases of coronavirus in the country.
Flights were set to resume to the Balearic Islands at the end of August, but the airline has now made the decision to cancel them for the rest of summer.
‘We remain completely committed to these fantastic destinations’
On Twitter, Jet2 said, “Because of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the current UK government advice, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend flights and holidays to the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca) for the rest of Summer 20.”
The airline explained that it is “very disappointed” by the turn of events.
Jet2 has been offering customers the option to rebook, a refund credit note, or a full cash refund when affected by any programme changes.
The airline explained, “We can assure our customers and partners in the Balearic Islands that we remain completely committed to these fantastic destinations.
“Bookings for next summer are looking strong, and we cannot wait to be back doing what we do best - working with hoteliers and our partners in Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca to make sure our customers enjoy their well-deserved holidays.”
Why did the travel advice to Spain and the Islands change?
Advice for holidaymakers set to travel to Spain has changed, with the FCO updating its ‘all but essential’ travel advice to include the Balearic and Canary islands on 27 July, after issuing the same guidelines for mainland Spain on 26 July.
Spain was previously exempt from this, with a travel corridor in place allowing visitors there to return to the UK without having to quarantine on their arrival.
The decision to update the travel advice to Spain and the Islands was “based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks in the country,” with “evidence of increases in cases of COVID-19 across Spain.”
When the travel advice changed for the country, Jet2 took the decision to temporarily suspend flights.
However, although flights to the Balearics will not resume for the rest of the summer season, flights to both the Canary Islands and mainland Spain are due to resume on 13 September 2020.
