I see that the city council is proposing to remove charges for its car parks on certain days in the run-up to Christmas. It does seem rather strange that a council that is perennially short of cash should give away the use of scarce resources at a time when peak demand would bring in much-needed revenue.
Apparently the reason for doing so is to generate additional car journeys into the city which will, apart from anything else, increase traffic congestion and delay to all road users including the buses.
So if the council does have the money to spare, may I suggest that next year it comes to an arrangement with Stagecoach to provide free bus travel on the days in question so that those who do not clog up the city’s roads with cars may obtain some help to do their Christmas shopping as well?
