A large stone was thrown at a passenger train, damaging the driver’s cab window.

Passengers were stranded at Windermere and many others were stuck at Lancaster from 7pm, with some not getting home until 1am.

The damaged train was the Northern 8:22pm Oxenholme to Windermere service, which was struck by the stone which had been thrown from a nearby bridge.

PC Adam Heslop, investigating, said: “The stone, which we suspect came from a nearby riverbed, smashed the outer skin of the front driver’s cab window.

“The train was travelling at 50mph and the stone was just millimetres from smashing through the inner glass which would have hit the driver, causing serious injury.

“Acts like this are criminal and dangerous and we are asking for the public’s help to trace those responsible. If you have any information please contact us.

“Add to this the cost of replacing the window, which is estimated to be £4,000 due to it being specialist glass, and you get some idea of the consequences of such a stupid and dangerous act.”
