Women urged to get tested

A campaign highlighting the importance of smear tests has been launched and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is urging all women in North Lancashire and Cumbria to keep their cervical screening appointments.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week (CSAW) which runs until June 21, is a UK-wide initiative led by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting women and their families affected by cervical cancer and cervical abnormalities.

The week aims to highlight the importance of cervical screening (smear) and how attending a screening can help to prevent cervical cancer.

About 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK, which amounts to two per cent of all cancers diagnosed in women.

UHMBT hopes the week will raise awareness of screening.
