Heysham Atoms narrowly lost away at league leaders Widnes West Bank on Saturday, although the visitors gave as good as they got throughout the 80 minutes.
The opening to the match was a predictable one for the Atoms as they conceded an early try wide out on the right with one of the first meaningful attacks of the game.
However, the Atoms sprung into action and the early damage was all but wiped out with 16 minutes played.
Captain Jamie Cottle returned after a three game absence and he made his presence tell with a neat chip ahead on the last tackle.
He skilfully regained possession and passed to Callum Hall, who had the vision to kick to his right and winger Callum Brodie won the race to the touch down.
The Atoms were disappointed with their efforts on the second West Bank try as they scored right down the middle, despite this being an area were the Atoms have tightened up in recent weeks.
The combination of Cottle and Hall were at it again on the right edge as the pivot found the second rower this time with a delayed pass, and a great angle of running from Hall. This time he kept ball in hand and beat the full back to score close to the posts, Higginson converting to give the Atoms a 12-10 lead.
With half-time approaching there was a flurry of scoring activity as West Bank scored their third before full back Michael Forrest made his mark on the game with the Atoms’ third try also.
Cottle claimed his third assist, kicking back towards the posts, wrong footing the defenders and Forrest dotted down close to the left upright as the teams went into the half time break level at 16-16.
The Atoms nudged ahead with a penalty goal from Forrest shortly after the restart to take the lead in the game for the first time at 18-16.
They now looked like they were building up a good head of steam but time and again poor ball control let them down.
The Atoms endured a couple of goal line drop outs before West Banks scrum half scored the all important try, giving his team a four point lead which proved to be enough to win them the game.
