Digital game Pokemon Go is the latest craze to hit the UK. And the best thing about it, as OWEN LAMBERT reports, is you can play and discover Morecambe at the same time.

Pokemon Go been criticised for its anti-social aspects. But these accusations couldn’t be further from the truth.

Almost every day I see parents and their children out searching for Pokemon and young groups of teens having fun.

Pokemon Go is also advocating a healthy lifestyle, as some aspects of the game can only be unlocked after walking long distances.

So now no matter where you go in Morecambe, you can sight-see, get fit and capture Pokemon to your heart’s content.

You can make a day trip of exploring the nooks and crannies of our local area all while capturing fuzzy little digital creatures on your smart phone.

How Pokemon Go works is by using a mobile device’s GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures – known as Pokemon – who appear on your screen.

I found many Pokemon in Torrisholme Square. The local church, of all places, turned out to be a Pokemon Gym, which is an area where you can battle other Pokemon.

As I walked down Broadway and deeper into Bare, I found that the types of Pokemon you discover are specific to your location.

For example, you may find fish Pokemon (known as Magikarp) near Morecambe Bay.

You will also find lots of Pokemon around landmarks, so it’s always useful to check buildings of interest such as the Eric Morecambe Statue.

Pokemon can also be discovered in areas that you wouldn’t normally expect them to be, like ghost Pokemon near Torrisholme Cemetery and crab Pokemon near the local Chinese takeaway.

Personally, if you wish to capture many Pokemon or see many varieties, I would recommend you go down to Happy Mount Park where you will find many ‘Pokestops’ and Gyms.

For anyone who hasn’t played it, I fully recommend you download the free app and just try it out.

Who knows? Maybe you will become the next Pokemon master.
