There is just one flood warning for Lancashire today as county braces for Storm Ellen - this is where it is

A swathe of strong winds are expected to sweep across much of the UK ahead of the weekend, with the Met Office warning of widespread travel chaos and flooding.

A yellow weather warning for wind is in force across all of England and Wales until 6pm today, with 21 flood warnings across the UK.

But only one flood warning has been issued in the North West, with the Environment Agency expecting some flooding on the Cumbrian coastline at North Morecambe Bay.

Elsewhere in the county, Wyre Council said it will be closing all storm boards along its coastline as a precaution today and tomorrow, due to expected high winds and tides. The Council is urging people not to walk along the promenade and to take extra care when travelling.

Storm Ellen has already claimed its first victim this morning after a man died on a beach in Cornwall. The storm is expected to hit parts of northern England this afternoon.

North Morecambe Bay Flood warning - what to expect

- Forecasters are warning of severe flooding along the coast, from Roosebeck to Carnforth, and wind speeds of up to 60mph.

- The flood warning is in force for this afternoon's high tide, which is expected to peak between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

- The Government's Flood Warning Information Service says "large and powerful waves" are expected to overtop sea defences as a result of high spring tides and strong winds.

- Significant tidal spray and flooding may affect roads and homes along the coast.

- The agency is also warning people to be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads where large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

Which areas will be affected?

Flooding is expected to affect Roa Island, Rampside, A5087 coast road, Aldingham, South Ulverston, Canal Foot, Greenodd, Cark, West Plain Farm, Grange-over-Sands, Meathop, Milnthorpe, B5282 coast road, Sandside and Arnside.

Friday's forecast

A Met Office spokesman said: "Strong southwesterly winds are expected to develop across much of England, Wales and southern Scotland during Friday.

"Wind gusts of 45-50 mph are expected fairly widely inland with gusts of 55-60 mph possible around coasts and over hills.

"Winds are then expected to gradually ease during late afternoon and evening."

- Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

- Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

- It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities are affected by spray and/or large waves

- Some damage to trees with debris on roads are possible given the time of year
