Met Office issues 48-hour snow and ice warning for Lancashire

It is the second day in a row that the Met Office has issued an urgent weather warning for Lancashire and the wider region.

The latest yellow weather warning will remain in effect from 6pm today (Wednesday, December 30) until 2pm Friday (New Year's Day).

The warning comes as forecasters predict ice is likely to form across parts of northern England, along with snow for some parts of the North West.

People are urged to take extra care on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, where icy patches are likely to form in the early morning and evening.

The freezing conditions are also expected to lead to some travel disruption, such as delays to rail journeys and bus services, and speed reductions on some stretches of motorway.

In its latest update, Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said: "There is a continued risk of snow and ice across many parts of northern England and there will be a significant wind chill as well.

"Ice will be an issue throughout this evening and overnight and it's going to be a bitterly cold night as temperatures plummet, leading to a very cold last day of the year.

"On New Year's Eve, we will have to bear it again, with further risk of sleet and snow until around 2pm.

"There will be a keen breeze, keeping things very cold into the New Year."

In Preston and South Ribble on New Year's Eve, we can expect max temps of 2°, with lows of -1°. In Blackpool and the Fylde coast, there is likely to be max temps of 3°, with lows of 0°.
