Wartimelove 70 years on

A wartime romance and wedding has turned into 70 years marriage for a Carnforth couple.

Stan and Lily Adey, 91 and 89, received a card from the Queen to commemorate their special platinum wedding anniversary, and the couple couldn’t be more chuffed.

The pair met in 1942 at The Rink in Sunderland, where they both went dancing with friends.

Lily said: “He asked me for a dance and he was a nice young man.

“We started courting and when I was invited to his house, we knew it was going to be serious.

“We were lucky to get rings at that time, there were only three rings at the jewellers and I chose the solitaire.

“We were married at St Gabriel’s Church, Sunderland in 1944, with 40 guests.

“We had to save up our coupons to have a ham salad dinner. We were very fortunate.”

Stan, a marine engineer and Lily, who lived with Lily’s mother until they saved up for their own house, had a son Stanley and a daughter Linda, now both in their sixties.

They also have four grandsons and two great grandsons.

The couple, who moved to Morecambe 26 years ago, have both enjoyed sequence dancing at The Platform and Torrisholme village hall, and also walking in the Lake District.

For their anniversary, they had a family celebration atThe Clarendon hotel in Morecambe.

They have also been given gifts of flowers from friends and family.

As for the secret to a happy marriage, Lily said: “We all have our differences so you have to learn to compromise and you find each other’s point of view.”
