Veteran Lancaster peace campaigner dies at 92

Peace campaigner Audrey Harland, who has died at the age of 92.

Audrey Harland will be remembered as a key member of Lancaster CND.

She was often to be seen in Market Square throughout the 1980s and early 1990s canvassing for CND and was known for her politeness and good humour.

Mrs Harland, who had lived in Morecambe since 1966, was an English teacher at Lancaster and Morecambe College and later a child care officer for Lancaster Social Services.

An outstanding student, she was the first of her family to go to university, on a scholarship to the London School of Economics, which relocated to Cambridge during the war.

There, she met a dashing young trainee barrister called Tunku Bahauddin, ‘Din’ for short, who was a member of the Malaysian royal family.

Her political views were formed in 1941 when Din was killed in front of her during an incendiary bomb attack, which destroyed her parents’ home.

This led to a deep belief in the wrongness of war and she campaigned for peace throughout her life, including several stints at Greenham Common.

Married twice, she found lasting happiness with her second husband Stan Harland.

Mrs Harland spent the final part of her life in Cove House, a residential home in Silverdale. She had been unwell for some time and her family were with her throughout. She leaves three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mrs Harland’s funeral is at Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium at 11.45am on Thursday February 4.
