Costain, builders of the Heysham to M6 link road, said the closure would not be needed but further weekend closures may take place before the end of 2015.

A Costain spokesman said: “Following last weekend’s successful removal of the temporary works (Paraslim) either side of the bridge deck, we no longer require the road to be closed.

A new bridge is being built on Torrisholme Road as part of the building of the new road to link the Heysham bypass with a remodelled Junction 34 of the M6.

Meanwhile, temporary three-way traffic lights have been installed on Morecambe Road outside Lancaster and Morecambe College until tomorrow (November 13) at around 5pm.

Essential diversion works of a 33kV oil assisted cable are currently being carried out. “The jointing pits required to undertake the diversion have been affected by congested services either side of the existing cable forcing the joint pit to be undertaken further in towards the carriageway of Morecambe Road (A683),” said the spokesman.

“As a result the new location of the pit now requires a larger area of temporary traffic management. The methodology has been designed to minimise the traffic management needed on Morecambe Road to just one lane of the carriageway and should be kept to a two day operation requirement only.

“We apologise for the short notice of these works. Unfortunately the details of the congested services were not known until after the traffic management plan was issued last Friday.”

Work on the Lune West Bridge has also restarted.

Richard Helme, Costain construction manager said that technical issues resulted in delays to lowering the bridge deck onto its supports.

He said: “It was at this stage in September that the operation was stopped for further analysis and to ensure the safety of all.

Engineers have been busy revising the methodology to enable the bridge to be safely lowered in a timely manner.

“This has now been developed and approved by independent structural engineers.

“Work has now recommenced and the operation to lower the bridge is running smoothly.

“Although we’ve experienced some lost time on the programme, it is one that we will be working hard to recover during the remaining duration.”
