Initially, the government said that licensed premises would not be allowed to serve takeaway alcoholic drinks, prompting an outcry from landlords, business owners and members of the public, which found its way into the House of Commons via MPs.

The new rules state customers must pre-order their drinks online, or by phone or post, which can be collected as long as they do not enter a premises.

Official guidelines published over the weekend initially indicated a ban on serving alcohol takeaways for restaurants and pubs that will be made to close from Thursday, November 5.

The Crossing Micropub, in Hest Bank, said it was "over the moon" about the U-turn, and thanked all of those who had put pressure on their MP to lobby the Prime Minister.

They said it will make a "huge difference".

The news will be particularly welcome to micropubs and small breweries, as well as lovers of fresh craft and cask beer.
